Easy Single Crochet Basket Pattern for Beginners

Today we’re going to make an easy single crochet basket for beginners! I don’t know about you, but I love making baskets. They are simple and quick to work up especially when using a super bulky weight yarn. This free crochet pattern only uses single crochet stitches which makes it the perfect project for absolute beginners. Even better? NO DECREASING!

The crab stitch border is optional but even an advanced beginner could do this, just be sure to follow the Youtube tutorial linked below the pattern for step by step instructions.

The idea for this basket pattern came to me when I needed a place to put all of my baby’s bath towels and supplies. I already had some Bernat Blanket bulky yarn on hand with no project in mind and it ended up working out wonderfully, as you can see!

The Yarn

For this project you will need Bernat Blanket yarn. It is a super bulky #6 weight and 100% polyester. You can really use any type of yarn for this project. If you choose to use a lighter weight, your basket will just turn out a little smaller and hey, that would still be a cute basket!

In the photos; the green basket was using the color Stormy Green and the orangish yellow yarn is called Burnt Mustard.

The Hooks

We’re going to use FOUR different crochet hooks for this pattern. I know that’s a lot, but it was kind of fun to keep switching after a few rows!

The reason why I did this was to create a basket that curved inward at the top without having to use any decreases.

I also chose to use multiple hook sizes because I felt that the bottom of the basket didn’t need to be as stiff as the sides and using a larger hook makes it a quicker project! I’m a little cheater, I know 😉

For this crocheted basket, you will need these hook sizes:

  • 10mm, 9mm, 8mm, and 6.5mm

If you already have all of these hook sizes, that’s great! If you know you have them but can’t find them, go check under the couch and inside the cushions 😆

If you’re missing a hook size, I highly recommend using the larger set of Clover Amour crochet hooks. In that set, you will find all the hook sizes you will need for this free pattern. These hooks are my absolute favorite and I recommend them to everyone!

The Stitches

This single crochet stitch basket is absolutely beginner friendly because all you need to know how to do is the chain stitch and single crochet. I finished the basket off with a crab stitch border (also know as reverse single crochet), but that is optional and the video tutorial will show you how to do this, step by step, even if you’re a beginner.

Troubleshooting

Are the sides of your basket too flimsy?

It’s normal for the sides to be a little flimsy. We are using a blanket yarn after all. However, they should be sturdy enough to stay up straight when you shape the basket. They will also stay up when you have items inside the basket, like towels.

If it’s not the typical flimsiness, you could try holding multiple strands of yarn. However, you will need an additional skein if you choose to do this and your basket will turn out a lot larger but I bet it would turn out beautifully!

If you’re still unhappy, try making these modern crochet storage baskets instead! That pattern uses multiple strands of cotton yarn which is great for a sturdier basket.
