One Row Repeat Rectangular Shawl Crochet Pattern

Today I want to share a free crochet pattern with you: the Wrap Me in a Hug Shawl! This is an easy rectangular crochet shawl pattern because it is a one row repeat. It’s the perfect pattern to crochet through stress because there’s only one stitch to remember. Using a lighter weight yarn also forces you to slow down and enjoy the process rather than rushing through it.

I love making crochet shawls with a rectangular shape because you don’t have to worry about increases or decreases. All you’re doing for this pattern is working row by row until you reach your desired length. Easy peasy!

This is the perfect shawl to work on when you just need to grab and go. You could even turn this pattern into a blanket or washcloth! By I love it as a cozy wrap, hence the name “wrap me in a hug” 🥰

I hope you enjoy making this pattern today! I would love to see your progress and finished photos! Tag me on Instagram @sigonimacaroni or join our Facebook group and show your progress there.

The Yarn

I choses to use a weight 2 yarn for this pattern and I know that probably sounds scary for you 🫣 Using a lightweight yarn like Premier Cotton Fair may sound daunting because it obviously takes longer, but I want you to think of it another way.

I designed this pattern as something to work on when you need to destress. I didn’t design it for something to finish quickly. That’s what Crocheting Through Boredom is for!

I loved using this yarn because it’s soft, it’s 50% cotton, and the stitch definition is gorgeous.

However, if you don’t want to use a weight 2 yarn, you can really use any yarn weight you prefer as it’s personal preference.

This shawl measures approximately 15 inches wide and 70 inches long. If you choose to use a weight 3 or 4 yarn, just make sure your foundation chain measures about 14 inches. Then add 2 more chains to the end.

One Row Repeat Stitch

One of the things that makes this easy crochet shawl pattern perfect for stress relief, is the one row repeat stitch pattern.

The main stitch we will be using in todays pattern is a half double crochet two together, often abbreviated as hdc2tog.

This is a US term. If you are in the UK, a half double crochet is known as a half treble crochet (or htr).

Here’s how to do this stitch:

  • Yarn over, insert hook into indicated st, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 5 loops

To see this in action, watch the full video tutorial here.

For the border, we will be using single and double crochet stitches. I love the border on this piece because it adds a touch of elegance to this lightweight shawl.

Troubleshooting

This easy crochet shawl pattern is pretty straight forward, as there is only one row to repeat. However, if you’re having trouble reading or following the pattern, watch the full video tutorial.

Special Stitches

Finished Measurements

  • 15” wide x 70” long (38cm x 178cm)
  • Gauge = 15 sts x 13 rows = 4″ square

Stitch Multiple

  • Chain any number, then add 2 for the foundation chain

Notes

  • Ch 2 counts as hdc; because you will be working into this stitch at the end of each row, make your second loop a little more loose so it’s easier to work into
  • For the foundation chain, I used a 4.5mm hook to make my chains more loose, that way it’s easier to work row one. If you don’t have a 4.5mm hook just crochet more loosely for your foundation chain
  • The number in parentheses at the end of the row is the stitch count you should have
  • For the border you will work sc evenly across the side of your rows. I like to work 1sc around the hdc post and 2sc around each turning chain – see the video tutorial for additional help
  • Use stitch markers to mark the last hdc2tog of each row so that the ch 2 (the last stitch) is easy to identify – see the video for additional help
