How To Crochet Easy Square Blanket: Free Pattern

I am so excited to share the Cozy Cabin Throw Blanket with you today! In this tutorial I will show you how to crochet an easy square blanket. It doesn’t require multiple granny squares. It’s just one big square! This mindless crochet pattern is perfect when you’re feeling stressed or angry and you just need to take your mind off the bad and focus on the good. It’s such a beautiful blanket, it’s a free pattern, and I think you’re going to love working it up.

As usual let’s talk about the basics behind this blanket pattern.

The Yarn

This square blanket pattern uses worsted weight yarn and the most beautiful color combinations. For this project I used Premier Basix Worsted and I love this yarn. But if you’re unable to get this, here are some alternatives you can try.

Keep in mind that you will need around 700 yds of cream colored yarn and around 540 yds of your main colors.

The Stitches

This square blanket crochet pattern is relatively easy. The trickiest part I think is reading the pattern. It sounds like it could be confusing but the crocheting itself is really simple. If you’re having trouble, you can also purchase the inexpensive, ad-free PDF that comes with a step by step picture tutorial.

This isn’t your typical classic granny square pattern, but it’s really close! It’s actually like the block stitch but instead of working in rows you’ll be working in rounds.

The stitches you will need to know are single crochet and double crochet stitches. You’ll also need to know how to work around chain stitches.

The Finished Size

The Cozy Cabin Throw Blanket is a massive afghan that measures about a 52 inch square. However, you can really make this blanket any size you like. Common square baby blanket sizes are 18 inches, 36 inches, or 40 inches. Here are some more standard crochet blanket sizes.

I would love for you to share your finished photos on Instagram or inside my Facebook Group! You can find me on Instagram @sigonimacaroni.

Notes

  • Chain 3 at beginning of each round counts as a double crochet
  • At the end of each row: Tie off yarn and attach new yarn in another corner. This prevents a crooked square and it makes the seams less noticeable (although with a large blanket it isn’t too noticeable either way)
  • The double crochet clusters will be worked around each of the chain spaces (ch-3 spaces)
  • I haven’t found the time to create a video tutorial for this pattern, however, you can find a detailed picture tutorial inside the premium PDF.

This pattern is perfect for crocheting through anger or stress. Once you get past the first few rows it starts to become a very mindless pattern. The repetition and the colors are calming, it’s a simple stitch repeat, and I think you’re going to love every minute.

Border

Attach Linen yarn to any stitch

Round 58: Ch 1, sc in each st around, with 3sc in each corner

*Optional* Round 59: Crab stitch in each stitch around

The crab stitch was my favorite way to border this blanket and so I wanted to show how to do it in the sample, however, I didn’t end up having enough yarn to add it to the full blanket. It’s up to you if you would like to purchase more to finish up the border or you can leave it with a simple single crochet border, which I really love too!

Tie off, weave in all ends.

The struggle is real! I’ve got myself in a tizzy.
I really, really want to make this blanket and I am wondering if you have a tutorial to go along with the pattern?

    Thanks,
    Suz

    1. I don’t have a video tutorial, but you can always send me an email at [email protected] and I can try to help you through it. The PDF also comes with a step by step photo tutorial if you’d like to purchase that on Etsy.
