Easy Double Crochet Dishcloth Pattern for Beginners

One of the best ways to learn how to crochet is to start by making crocheted dishcloths (and washcloths of course). Today I wanted to share this free crochet dishcloth pattern with you for that reason. This is the best way to practice because you’re making something quick and you can use them in your kitchen, mistakes and all.

You heard that right! Who cares if you make a mistake?! Learning to crochet is all about experimentation.

Today I’m going to share how to crochet this easy crochet dishcloth pattern using double crochet with a fun twist.

This easy double crochet dishcloth pattern for beginners that I’m going to start with you today is a great project for a few reasons.

Why you should crochet this double crochet dishcloth

You will learn to:

  • Get the hang of double crochet stitches
  • how to crochet in between posts
  • the best cotton yarn to work with
  • and how to create a simple single crochet border

So many great things to learn! This easy crochet dishcloth pattern also uses a very simple repeating stitch pattern making it easy to remember.

And if you love this crochet dish cloth pattern, you’re going to love this set of crochet washcloth patterns. Those washcloths will help you to practice the basic crochet stitches and learn a few tricks along the way. Just like the one I’m sharing today.

First let’s talk about the yarn you’ll want to use.

Best Yarn to Use for Crochet Dishcloths

To put it simply, the best yarn to use for crochet dishcloths is 100% cotton.

The reason why is because they are absorbent and it holds up well in the wash. Plus, you’re going to be using them a lot so it needs to be made with a durable fabric.

That’s cotton for you!

If you chose to use acrylic yarn, it wouldn’t hold up well and it would just feel like a mushy mess when cleaning up any spills.

Here are some of my favorite cotton yarns:

Make sure you also choose a different color for your accent color unless you’d like to complete the entire dishcloth in one color, which is totally fine too!

If you’re here just for practice and not the need to make this specifically to use in the kitchen, feel free to use any yarn fiber!

Cotton yarn can be a little harder to work with for beginner crocheters.

But because this washcloth is great practice, it’s completely fine to use this free pattern as a fun way to practice the basic crochet stitches. Then maybe you can turn it into a placemat or table runner if you choose!

To adjust the pattern to be longer, just create more rows!

And if you need some more ideas on choosing the best yarn as a beginner, check out the post below!

How do you use crochet dishcloths?

I remember when I first started learning to crochet and I wondered how to use a crochet dishcloth, too. It’s really very simple!

You use a crochet dishcloth the same way you would a paper towel or kitchen towel!

You can use them to dry dishes, washing dishes, cleaning the counters, or even as hot pads (if you have the right pattern and yarn). And surprisingly, they work really well!

They also make really great gifts once you get the hang of making them!

To create a simple single crochet border:

When I wrote the border instructions initially, it seemed like a lot of words. So I broke it down by steps in hopes to make it easier to digest. You can also watch the full video tutorial for additional help.

  1. Ch 1, turn work. Sc in space between posts until you reach the last stitch.
  2. 3sc around the ch 2 turning ch from previous row
  3. Turn work 90 degrees to crochet along side of rows.
  4. Sc evenly along side (it doesn’t have to be perfect, but I like to place 2 sc at the end of every dc row – see the video tutorial for more of a visual)
  5. 3sc around the last dc at the bottom
  6. Turn work 90 degrees to crochet along opposite side of foundation row
  7. Sc in space between posts until you reach the last stitch.
  8. 3sc around the last dc of the row
  9. Turn work 90 degrees to crochet along side of rows.
  10. Sc evenly along side as you did previously, ensuring that you have the same amount of stitches on each side.

Tie off work and weave in all ends.
