Small Crochet Basket Pattern for Beginners

If you’re wanting to learn how to crochet a basket, it doesn’t get any simpler than this. But just because it’s easy, doesn’t mean it isn’t cute! This small crochet basket pattern for beginners is made with super bulky yarn, making it work up quickly and the perfect catch-all decor piece. This free crochet basket pattern is perfect for beginners who are looking to start making the cutest crochet baskets.

One of the concerns for crocheting baskets is ensuring that the sides stay stiff. There are a few tricks to keeping the sides of your crochet basket stiff enough to stand up on their own.

The first is to use a hook size smaller than the yarn you’re using recommends. In today’s simple crochet basket pattern, we’ll be using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This yarn recommends a 9mm hook so we will be using an 8mm hook for this crochet basket tutorial.

Using a smaller hook size will give you tighter stitches which will make your crochet basket more stiff. However, it also means more strain on your hands. If you struggle with arthritis or carpal tunnel and this is an issue for you, try these compression gloves.

The second way to ensure stiff sides for crochet baskets is to work through the back loop only after you’re finished with the base of the basket. This will be explained later in the tutorial.

    1. I’m so glad I’ve been able to help! These are the gloves I purchased: https://amzn.to/3yxvNy8

But I haven’t used them enough to fully recommend them. I highly recommend doing some research and reading reviews to make sure they’ll work well for you before you purchase.

  3. I made the basket in River Run. I liked the way the Crab Stitch finished it. I couldn’t figure out how to include a picture but it looks great.
