Double Strand Scrap Blanket | Free Crochet Pattern

Whether you have a ton of yarn you’d like to use up or you want to make a mindless, colorful blanket, you’re going to love the Double Strand Scrap Blanket. This free crochet pattern is easy, beginner friendly, and works up fairly quickly for a blanket. This pattern holds double strands throughout the entire blanket but I’ll give you tips on how to work with multiple strands along the way.

Yes, I know. Another pattern of mine is using multiple strands! As you can tell, I am obsessed with this technique and should probably put together my own little roundup of my double stranded crochet patterns. But this is a stash busting blanket, so using double strands is a great way to reduce your stash quickly.

So I went through my stash and found a bunch of colors that I purchased to make another pattern, but I thought about it and I just wasn’t feeling that pattern anymore. And because the colors were so random I didn’t know what else I would be able to make with them.

That’s when I thought I would put multiple strands together. It might just be me, but I always have a lot of white yarn in my stash. I don’t even feel like I use much of it, but there’s always a surplus of white yarn.

So I thought, to get rid of all of this white yarn, I’ll hold a strand with each color. To be honest, I did not think this was going to work out. But as I started going, it started turning into this wonderfully beautiful blanket that my son has now claimed his own.

To Stash Bust or Not To Stash Bust?

If you read the story behind the Double Strand Scrap Blanket, it was absolutely a stash buster in my case. But it turned out so beautifully that you could just purchase these colors and put them together as I did.

If you do want to use the same colors, I used Caron Simply Soft and held a strand of Off White with each of the colors in the order below:

1. Harvest Red
2. Chocolate
3. Pumpkin
4. Robins Egg
5. Dark Sage
6. Sunshine
7. Cobalt Blue
8. Chartreuse

Tips for Using the Double Strand Scrap Blanket Crochet Pattern to Bust Your Stash

First things first, you’ll need white yarn. White yarn always looks pretty with any color you match it up with.

I don’t know about you, but I always have a surplus of white yarn so that’s why I decided to test it out. I used 3 skeins of Caron Simply Soft in Off White, but you can use any medium weight yarn.

A great substitute would be Lion Brand Pound of Love because it’s such a large skein and I think you would only need one, but don’t take my word on that.

After you have your white yarn, make a couple test swatches like the one I made below. This will help you to see if you really do like the colors together. It will also help you practice working with multiple strands if you haven’t already.

Next, line up your colors to make sure you like the order.

For my blanket, I was able to create an even amount of rows for each color (because I’m OCD and I couldn’t look at it any other way), but if you’re using random scraps of yarn in your stash, you may not have enough of a certain color.

Don’t let that stop you! Make it your own.

I think it would look pretty unique if you used different colors, with some rows longer than others. But before starting the next color, crochet a line of just white to separate them. If you do this, I would love to see it!

Crocheting With Multiple Strands

As I said before, I just love crocheting with multiple strands! It can make something so simple look so beautiful, as you can tell with this Double Strand Scrap Blanket Crochet Pattern 😉

If you’ve never crocheted with multiple strands, it’s not as hard as you think! Here are a few tips:

• Pull from the center for each skein so they don’t get tangled together
• When you’re making each stitch, be sure that your hook is catching both strands as you go
• Cut your yarn and tie off before you start a new color rather than seamlessly changing colors. With this pattern specifically, since we’re holding a strand of white throughout, changing colors that way would only make things more complicated. Plus -bonus- you’ll know that your strands are extra secure!
