Small Chunky Crochet Bumblebee | Free Crochet Pattern

Crochet bumblebees are all the rage these days because of the infamous TikTok bumblebee. I’ve designed a small chunky crochet bumblebee that would make the perfect amigurumi toy for kids of all ages. Not only will you learn how to crochet a bumblebee within the free crochet pattern, but I also have instructions for the beehive inside the premium PDF pattern. This will really completely your crocheted amigurumi bumblebee toy!

The inspiration behind this bumblebee toy came from Hobbii, who challenged me to design an amigurumi toy using their Amigo Giga yarn. If you want to hear more about the challenge and how I came up with this idea, you can watch the video tutorial here.

Yarn Used

That brings me to the yarn I used for this free crochet bumblebee pattern. Amigo Giga is a bulky weight #5 yarn that you can only find over at Hobbii. They are such a great company and although they’re based in Copenhagen, their yarn reaches the US much quicker than expected (at least in my experiences).

Because we’re using such a thick yarn for this small chunky bumblebee, each one works up super quickly! For this bumblebee crochet pattern, you will need 1 skein each in sunflower, white, and cast iron. These 3 skeins will make at least 5 bumblebees if not more!

Yarn Substitution

If you would like to crochet a small chunky bumblebee like the one I’ve made, you will need to use a bulky weight #5 yarn. If you can’t find a bulky weight yarn in these colors, I highly recommend the yarn I’m using which is Amigo Giga.

There are a few different things you can do if you want to change it up.

  • You can use a different weight yarn
    • If you use a lightweight or medium weight yarn, your bee will turn out smaller (but just as cute!)
    • & if you use a super bulky yarn, your bee will turn out bigger!
  • You can hold multiple strands of medium weight yarn if you want to match the bulkiness of the bee

Abbreviations used:

  • Ch – chain
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Sl st – slip stitch

Special Stitches

  • Half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog): Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over pull through all 4 loops

  • 3.5 inches tall x 4.5 inches long

Notes

  • If you don’t know how to make a magic circle, chain 2 and place 8hdc into the first chain for round 1 of the bumblebee.
  • This pattern is worked up using joined rounds. At the end of each round, sl st to the first stitch of the round to join

Bumblebee Crochet Pattern Instructions

Starting with yellow, create a magic circle and ch 1

Round 1: 8hdc in circle, join (8)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2hdc each st around, join (16)

Change to black

Round 3: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Attach safety eyes in between rounds 1 & 2

Change to yellow

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Change to black

Round 5: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Change to yellow

Round 6: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Change to black

Round 7: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Change to yellow

Round 8: Ch 1, hdc each st around, join.

Stuff firmly with polyfil or stuffing of choice (this is also where you will insert the ball rattle)

Round 9: Ch 1, hdc2tog around, join.

Tie off and leave longer tail to close up hole and weave in ends.

Bumblebee Wings (make 2)

Row 1: Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc next ch, 4hdc last ch, turn to work on opposite side of chain, sc next ch, sl st next ch

Tie off leaving long tail to sew wings onto body

Antennas

Cut a long strand of black yarn, about 10 inches.

Insert hook around the post of the hdc on Round 3 – above one of the eyes

Pull yarn so that both ends line up evenly.

Use one strand to chain 2, then chain 1 more and pull the strand all the way through. Tie a knot on top to make it more secure.

Skip one hdc and insert hook around the next hdc post and repeat the same process. See photos below for additional help
