For the Love of Wine Bottle Cozy

In lieu of National Wine and Cheese Day, I have brought you some good, good, goodies! The For the Love of Wine Bottle Cozy is something I wanted to design for all the wine lovers out there because what’s better than a glass of wine?

A glass of wine that comes from a bottle of said wine, covered by a decorative cozy… Duh.

Sometimes wine is just necessary, am I right?

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE wine. Well… I love the sweet, long-way-from-bitter kinds anyway… Hee hee.

And on that note, I bring you story time!

There was a point in time when my husband and I both wanted to venture out and try various brands of wine, both bitter and sweet, just to see what our taste buds could handle. We kept talking about it, but never actually did it so this past Valentine’s Day I guess we both had the same thought.

We put our son down at the normal time and I made my husband stay in the living room while I gathered all of my supplies.

Not realizing that we got each other the same thing, he entered the room with a jumbo bottle of wine in one hand and some classy wine glasses in the other. And there I was, standing in front of my SIX miniature bottles of wine and another set of classy wine glasses. Along with flameless candles and a notepad. Can I just say, great minds think alike?

Anyway, to make an already long story shorter, we covered the labels and had our own little wine tasting on top of our queen size bed. That is when we discovered our taste buds could only tolerate 2 of the 7 bottles of wine we now had.

Lesson Learned. In a very fun, totally worth it, kind of way.

Question of the day: What’s your favorite kind of wine?

Moving on! I have to say, I LOVE the look of this wine bottle cozy. It was designed incorporating the Fans and Trellis stitch which you can see is a gorgeous lacy stitch. I’ve even created a quick and easy bonus buddy to use along with your holder 😉

A couple of things a wine bottle cozy would be good for:

  • the PERFECT housewarming gift (don’t forget the bottle of wine!)
  • as a gift for your bridesmaids
  • a last minute birthday/Christmas present for your parents/in-laws
  • OR a gift for yourself! Sometimes you just got to treat yo’self!

Also, if you’re not into drinking wine, you could use this to hold your water bottle 😉

Okay, okay. Who’s ready for the pattern?

Materials:

  • 1 ball of Lily Sugar & Cream 100% Cotton yarn
    • (You could also use Peaches and Cream yarn. You can find it at Walmart for $1.50 😉
  • Size H/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Marker

Stitch Guide:

Notes:

  • This pattern can be made using any worsted weight yarn (I really like the color choices of Big Twist Value), however, I recommend using a 100% Cotton yarn like Peaches & Cream or Lily Sugar & Cream because they hold better. Nonetheless, if you don’t mind the stretch, you can go for an acrylic yarn.
  • When working the base of the cozy:
    • It may sound daunting, but at the end of each round count and make sure you have the correct number of stitches. Miscounting could mess up the outcome of your cozy. But don’t fret, I’ve left the number of stitches you should have at the end of each round in parentheses at the end of each instruction.
    • Hint: For every round after Round 2, you will always start with one sc in the base of your ch 1 and you will end with 2 sc in the last stitch.

Body

Form a magic circle, ch 1.

Round 1:

6 sc in magic circle. Pull tail tight. Sl st to first st. Ch 1. (6)

Round 2:

2 sc in same st as ch 1 and in each st around. Sl st to first sc. Ch 1. (12)

Round 3:

1 sc in the first st. [2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st]. Rep [ ] ending with 2 sc in the last st. Sl st to the first sc. Ch 1. (18)

Round 4:

1 sc in each of the next two st. [2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next two st]. Rep [ ] ending with 2 sc in the last st. Sl st to the first sc. Ch 1. (24)

Round 5:

1 sc in each of the next three st. [2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next three st]. Rep [ ] ending with 2 sc in the last st. Sl st to the first sc. Ch 1. (30)

Round 6:

Round 7:

Round 8:

Round 9:

Ch 2. [7 dc into the next ch 5 sp. Sc into the next ch 5 sp. Ch 5. Sc into next ch 5 sp.] Rep [ ] two more times, ending with 1 sc in last ch 5 sp.

*You should have three 7 dc groups with three ch 5 sp between each of them.*

From this row forward, we will be working in continuous rounds. For beginners, this means we will not be joining each round together with a sl st.

*This is where your stitch marker comes in handy. Place the stitch marker in the last sc you made just so you know where the beginning of each round is and move it up each round.*

Round 10:

[Sc in the 2nd dc of the 7 dc group. Ch 5. Sk 3 st. Sc in the 6th dc of that same 7 dc group. Ch 5. Sc in the next ch 5 sp. Ch 5.] Rep [ ] two more times. You will end the round with ch 5.

Round 11:

[7 dc in the next ch 5 sp. Sc in next ch 5 sp. Ch 5. Sc in next ch 5 sp.] Rep [ ] two more times. You will end with 1 sc in last ch 5 sp.

*Handy Hint: Your 7 dc should line up right above the 7 dc group from the previous round.

Repeat rows 10 and 11 until you reach 7 total rows of 7 dc groups.

You should have ended with 1 sc in the last ch 5 sp. Sl st into same ch 5 sp. Tie off and weave in ends.

Handles

Flip work inside out.

Attach yarn on the 5th dc (counting from the left) on any of the 7 dc groups. Ch 1.

Row 1:

1 sc in the same st as ch 1 and in each of the next 3 st. Ch 1, turn your work.

Row 2:

Sc in the base of ch 1 st and in each of the next 3 st. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 for 20 more rows, leaving you with 22 total rows of 4 sc stitches.

At the end of your 22nd row, ch 1 and tie off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Repeat this same process for the other two 7 dc groups, except instead of leaving a long tail, just tie off and weave in the ends.

Assembly

Once you’re done with all 3 straps, hold them all together at the top being careful not to twist (I learned this the hard way) and sew the tops together with the long tail you created. There’s no specific pattern to this. Just make sure you sew them all together nice and tight and sturdy. Weave in the ends to make sure it doesn’t come undone.

Fin.

And you’re done! One wine bottle cozy down, a million more to go! Once you make one, you’re going to want to make one for everyone in your family.
