Marty the Crochet Monster Pillow

Halloween is right around the corner so I wanted to make sure I had these bad boys up for you. It’s time to start making some awesome pillows for your little ones or just to use as your Halloween decor! Marty the Crochet Monster Pillow, along with the other two crochet Monster Pillows, are super (SOFT) quick and easy to make. We’ll be using Bernat Blanket yarn and a large 8mm crochet hook.

These crochet monster pillows were inspired by Halloween, of course, and just because I wanted to make something fun that kids would enjoy with faces that are more goofy rather than spooky. My 3 year old son absolutely loves them. Has to make sure they’re all in his bed before he goes to sleep. My niece, on the other hand, she’s 1. Absolutely terrified! But she HATES all toys with faces… it cracks me up.

Anyway! Enough with the chatter. I decided to make THREE different monster pillows in a sort of series. The first one (this one) is named Marty! The next two are Grumly and Mr. Frank and they will both be up next week!

If you’re interested in the next two crochet monster pillows, find them here when they’re available:

Before I get into the actual pattern, I wanted to give a quick overview on how I sewed my Monster Pillow together.

The first thing to know is we will be crocheting six separate pieces and then single crocheting them together in the end to form the pillow shape. It’s easier than it sounds, I promise.

After I created the facial features, I sewed them onto one of the larger panels THEN I started sewing together Marty the Monster. You can begin with either the front or back panel and then grab one of the sides and start evenly single crocheting the sides together. If you start with the side panel there will not be any stitches to follow so you will single crochet evenly along the side of your work.

**Note: You can hold your work together by attaching a piece of yarn or a stitch marker at the top and bottom if that makes it easier for you. Totally optional.

When you’re done attaching your first side, do not tie off. Grab your next side and continue single crocheting. Do the same with the last two sides. When you reach the end, fasten off and do the same exact thing with the other side of your Monster Pillow, BUT leave one side open so you can stuff your pillow until its nice and FLUFFY. When you’ve stuffed it enough, continue single crocheting the last side together.

Your corners will still be open at this point. All you need to do is take a large tapestry needle and sew the edges shut and that’s that!

Assembly:

Sew the pupils onto the eyes and the eyes onto one of the large panels.

Sew the mouth onto the panel with the teeth on top of that.

Sc together the back panel to each side panel around and do the same with the front panel BUT before you finish off the last side, stuff it profusely with your polyfil stuffing. It takes quite a bit!

Take your large eyed tapestry needle and sew the corners of the panels shut.

Lastly, sew your horns on to the top of your monster with your tapestry needle!

Now take a look at your brand new Marty Monster and give him a giant hug because…

IT’S SO FLUFFY!

I’m going to be honest with you. I’m not even sure how or why I got on the monster kick, but I can tell you one thing, I had SO much fun creating this crochet monster pillows! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Personally, I just think it’s fun to be whatever the hell you want for a night. The kids have fun, you have fun, they work hard to get mounds of candy, and you steal most of their candy. Or is that just me?!

But more than All Hallows Eve, I just love Halloween decorations, crafts, and fun food to try out! This weekend marks the time we will begin doing that! What’s your favorite part of Halloween?

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask and I will help out as much as I can. I’m also hoping to create a video tutorial so if that’s something you’re interested in, please let me know!
