7 Simple Tricks to Wake Up Earlier Each Morning

Are you a stay at home mom who needs a little extra ‘me’ time each morning? Do you have a job that starts early in the morning and you’re having a hard time making it out the door in time? Or maybe you just want to become a morning person! If any of these sound about right, I have put together 7 Simple Tricks to Wake Up Earlier Each Morning that I use myself! If you use them the right way, you will STAY AWAKE too! It’s hard enough to wake up early. Walking around like a zombie when you have no choice but to get up is no fun.

Over the years I’ve had several different jobs that, for some reason, have had ridiculously early start times. Not only did I have to be there early, but each of them were about 45 minutes to an hour away depending on traffic (meaning I had to be up EXTRA early). At one point I had a job where I had to wake up at 4am in order to get there at 5am and that was EVERY SATURDAY. So glad that job’s over. Another job I had to wake up at 4:30am to be there at 6am and for that job I usually didn’t leave until about 6pm. Needless to say, those days consisted of a LOT of coffee. Except that was back when I didn’t have a child and I was a workaholic so it was actually my favorite job! Shout out to Blue Cross <3

However, many good things have come out of these jobs! Of course the experience, but they’ve also turned me into quite the morning person. Having to wake up mighty early for these jobs has helped me to find ways to wake up earlier without being hella groggy all morning.

I didn’t realize how much of a morning person I was until my sister started telling me how hard it was for her to wake up in the morning. Now that I’ve realized how hard it is for some people, I thought I would share with you these 7 Simple Tricks to Wake Up Earlier Each Morning!

7 Simple Tricks to Wake Up Earlier Each Morning

 

1. Set an alarm

Yeah, yeah, yeah lady that’s obvious. But when I say set AN alarm, I really mean set multiple.

How many of us use our smart phones as an alarm nowadays? Pretty much everyone right? If you don’t use your smart phone as an alarm, you can still use this tip, just ixnay the ringer options.

I personally choose to wake up around 5am. Obviously, you don’t have to wake up this early but this chick has a toddler and if I’m not up before him, my whole day is practically ruined. So what I do is set four, count ’em, FOUR separate alarms in 15 minute increments beginning at 5 o’clock, ending at 5:45.

Don’t just stop there, though. When your alarm goes off, how annoyed do you get? When I had the default ringer on, I would wake up beyond irritated because the tone was SO annoying. I would rush to turn it off and it would immediately put me in a crap mood. You don’t want that.

Take the time to go through the list of ringer choices available for your phone. Choose something that is loud but soft. Meaning you’ll wake up thinking, Wow, what’s that beautiful sound? Let me wake up and hear more! I mean, you probably won’t wake up that excited, but either way it will put you in a better mood than waking up to a fire alarm type sound. Hearing the sound of birds tweeting is a good one! I always wake up feeling like I’m in a Fairy Tale…

Additionally, I have different ringers on each of my alarms. If the first sound doesn’t wake me up enough, the next sound should wake me up more. Then maybe I’ll switch those two ringers to see which one does a better job of getting me out of bed the first time.

In case you’re a Curious Georgette, I have an iPhone 6 and the ringers I use are: Illuminate, Slow Rise, Twinkle, and the Classic alarm. I use the Classic alarm as my last alarm because, like I said, I have to get out of bed before my toddler and I know it’ll make me Get. TF. Up. Luckily I’m most likely up by then so I turn it off before it has the chance to scream at me.

2. Motivational Words

This kind of goes hand in hand with the alarm but it’s something a little extra so I thought it could use its own step. After your four separate alarms are set, go into the notes section within each alarm and type something motivational or something that makes you want to get up in the morning. Maybe something exciting you’re doing that day.

Currently, mine say: Make that dough; Work hard, don’t procrastinate; Prove them wrong; and the classic, Seize the day.

If you use a smart phone as your alarm, then you almost always have to look at your screen in order to turn your alarm off. When you do, you’ll see in big words, “SEIZE THE DAY.” It’s basically like your phone is saying, “I see your finger creeping towards the snooze button. I guess you just want to be a failure today.” Maybe that’s a little harsh… but that’s what works for me!

3. Take a Shower or AT LEAST Wash Your Face

My husband takes a shower every morning as soon as he gets up in order to wake himself up more. He kept trying to convince me to do the same because he knew I was struggling with waking up earlier (when I was out of routine). Finally I gave it a chance and wow, does it make a difference!

I don’t always take a shower first thing, but when I do I truly feel like my whole day is set up for success. I’m more awake AND I don’t have to scrounge for time to take a shower throughout the day. By bedtime it’s like Hello, I’ve been dealing with a crazy toddler all day. Screw the shower, I just want to snuggle up in my sheets. Basically, morning is the best time for a shower (in MY personal situation)

However, if you don’t have a toddler running around or you don’t wake up early enough to take one (or if you just don’t feel like it) you should at least wash your face.

I am not the best person to ask about a skin care routine. I need to step up my game in that department. (Any suggestions?? I’d love to hear your skin care routines!) For now, I use a Neutrogena face wash that I picked up at Walmart originally but now I purchase it over on Amazon whenever I run out (yes, because I’m lazy). I really like this face wash because when you’re scrubbing your face, it releases a cool sensation that really helps to wake you up. I love my face wash for this reason and I encourage you to find something similar.

 

4. Make Your Bed

As kids we were always told to do this. If you were like me, you would respond with stomping your feet and/or grunting, “But mommm what’s the point?! I’m just gonna sleep in it tonight anyway!”

No, but really. There is a point and thank you mom for always making me do it. It truly is a vital part of your morning and even your day. Not only does it prevent you from crawling back in bed in the morning, but it makes you feel clean and tidy and puts you in a better mood.

After I make my bed and I look at my spotless room, it puts me in a great mood. Just like how when I take a morning shower it sets up my day. If my bed is not made and looks messy, it makes me feel unorganized and completely throws me off.

5. Get Dressed

Get outta those comfy PJs that make you want to get back in bed and, as some people say, “Dress the part!” If you’re someone who has a 9-5 job, this will be an easy (probably obvious) task for you. But if you’re a work from home/stay at home mom, this is important.

When most people think about having a work from home job they think, “I wish I could work from home so I could work in my PJs all day long.” No. It don’t work that way. While this is technically true, it is probably the least productive thing you can do. If you’re in your pajamas all day, you’re not going to have the mindset to be your most productive self and get the day started.

Some people get all fancy and dress up with their heels and all that jazz. That is awesome and I totally wish I could do that. However, I have broken many bones in my life and I am not breaking another one by tripping and falling over a car toy in my high heels. Nah, I’ma throw on a pair of leggings and a cute shirt… and some socks. Always gotta have socks. A pair of my Harry Potter socks to be more specific. I have like 50 pairs.

 

6. Drink Water

Lemon water at that! This is super important. Don’t worry you can still have your coffee, but drink this glass of water FIRST.

When you wake up in the morning, every morning, your body is naturally dehydrated. Drinking coffee will only dehydrate your body more. That is why drinking a glass a water before you drink your coffee is a lot more effective. Not only are you rehydrating your body, but it will give you more natural energy throughout the morning!

 

7. Put on some Makeup

This is optional.

Maybe you don’t wear makeup; either you don’t need it or you don’t care to wear it. I’m with you on that. I don’t wear it half the time, but when I DO, I feel confident and just ready to take on the day. Plus, if I bump into someone I know at the store they’ll think, “Wow, she looks so happy and put together.” (when I’m clearly not) Instead of, “Woah. Is she feeling okay?”

Even if I’m not really going out and about that day it still makes me feel pretty!

 

 

And there you have it! AT LEAST one of these 7 Simple Tricks to Wake up Earlier Each Morning should turn you into a morning person in no time. Remember, you won’t become a morning person overnight. If that’s something you really want, then you’ll have to continue to follow these steps every morning until you turn it into a habit! A lot of these tricks will also motivate you to take care of those goals you set yourself this year!

    Washing my face in the morning is a miracle for me. I feel so much more alive after! My goal for this year to train myself to wake up earlier. If I can get to 6:30, I’ll be happy!

      Doesn’t it?! It just makes you feel refreshed and wide-eyed! Especially the kinds that have the cool sensation when you rub it in. It’s like someone pouring a cold bucket of water over your head when you’re sleeping!

    Good trick using all those alarms! Yes, I wash my face with cold water too Sigoni. Apparently, it helps with keeping wrinkles at bay – so a dual reason. I try a Grapefruit juice (since we have plenty) every so often unless we are gifted some lemons. I also watch my teeth and the tooth enamel wearing from the acid (apparently) Thanks for the tips

    These are great tips! Getting up has made such a difference in my everyday. I even set an alarm to tell me to go to bed.

      I need to do the same with setting an alarm to go to sleep! I would pull all nighters every night if it was physically possible. I hate sleep lol but I know that it’s obviously necessary to get a good amount of sleep every night.

    I found that I have to stop hitting the snooze button–which gradually makes getting up on the first alarm an instinct rather than something you have to consciously decide to do. I go through phases of struggling with this, but it’s all about setting habits that “sleepy you” doesn’t have the choice to disagree with, I’ve found!

      Yes agreed! It’s hard for me sometimes too. And that’s a good point about making habits so that “sleepy you” doesn’t have a choice. One thing you could do is put your phone halfway across the room so you have to physically get up. I don’t do this because I feel like that would irritate me lol but it could work for others!

    My husband sets multiple alarms and I hate it. I’m pretty good at getting up on my first alarm, since once I’m up I’m up. But yes on the water. And I’ve started trying to make my bed more too. 🙂

      Yeah my husband isn’t here to complain about my multiple alarms! Haha! But when he comes home I’m sure we’ll have to readjust some things! I’ve been doing this so long though that USUALLY all it takes is one alarm to get me up. Doesn’t making your bed make such a difference?!

      It definitely is hard when you first start but another tip you could do is set your alarm 15 minutes earlier each day. I’ve heard people say it works! I’ve never tried it that way myself and that why I didn’t include it but it could work for you!

    Great suggestions! I am a 4:30 riser so I can get to my 5:00 gym class each morning. The game changer for me has been a light-alarm clock, which slowly glows over a 30 minute time period like a sunrise. It has made getting out of bed SO MUCH EASIER in the morning, because I’m not getting up in the pitch black any longer,

    These are great tips. I am not a morning person what so ever. I have alarms that I use and this week I bumped up my alarm a little earlier to see if I would feel better. So far so good and I get out of the house a little earlier. I need to get into the routine of washing my face in the morning I bet that would help me feel refreshed.

      Yes it definitely does! You may not feel like it when you wake up and you’ll give every excuse not to (I even do it sometimes!), but once you do it you feel so much better!
